SPEC has worked on a number of cutting edge solar technology projects including its recent work with Konarka and its co-founder and Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Alan Heeger to support the manufacturing process of a photo-reactive polymer material invented by Konarka.  This proprietary material can be printed or coated inexpensively onto flexible substrates using roll-to-roll manufacturing, similar to the way newspaper is printed on large rolls of paper.  The resulting Power Plastic can then be manufactured into a wide range of end-use products. SPEC has another solar energy project in the pipeline that is funded by the Solar Energy Consortium (TSEC). With this solar project SPEC will lend its expertise to help its client begin manufacturing patented holographic planar concentrator technology. This technology produces a new type of solar concentrator using inscribed holograms in a transparent medium sealed between pieces of glass.

The Department of Energy has a Solar Energy Technologies Program focusing on technology development and reducing costs.  The greatest research and development challenges are reducing costs, improving system performance, and finding new ways to generate and store energy captured from the sun. More than $170 million is spent each year in research and development on two solar electric technologies with the greatest potential to reach cost competitiveness by 2015: photovoltaics (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP).
